Mile 41.5 - Also known as Spinks Ferry, this was the target of a Confederate
attack during the Civil War. General Hill of the Confederate army was to destroy
the Monocacy aqueduct but Thomas Walter, the Lock 27 lock keeper persuaded him to
drain the canal at Lock 27 instead. General Hill agreed, particularly because
he didn't have the supplies to destroy the aqueduct. He drilled the masonry and
placed a charge and did manage enough damage as to disrupt service. The lock
keeper, Thomas Walter, was nearly discharged after the incident for collaborating
with the Confederates but the locals were impressed at his efforts to save the aqueduct
and supported him enough to allow him to keep his job!
